At the 11th China International Energy Storage Conference held by China Industrial Association of Power Sources on May 24, the National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) under China Energy won a “2021 China Energy Storage Industry’s Best Cascade Utilization Demonstration Project” award for its “modular, highly safe, low-cost, extensible, and easily maintainable” projects.

Using renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels is an important approach to achieve carbon neutrality, and energy storage is a key technology for supporting the new power system with renewable energy as the main source. The application of retired power batteries for energy storage on the renewable energy power generation side can significantly improve the effect of carbon neutrality through “energy substitution” and “recycling.” In the meantime, the retired power batteries have a significant advantage in price, which can greatly reduce the cost of the energy storage system and will lay a solid foundation for the large-scale application of the cascade energy storage system.
