China Energy Investment Corp. (CHN Energy) commissioned the second generation unit of its gas-fired power plant, Anji Power Plant, in east China’s Zhejiang province on Tuesday. This marks the full operation of the country’s gas-fired power plant with the largest single-unit capacity and highest efficiency.

Anji Power Plant has a total installed capacity of 1.686 gigawatts and is equipped with two 843-megawatt gas–steam combined-cycle units. Both units adopt internationally advanced 9H-class gas turbine technology and innovatively apply multiple cutting-edge combustion and control technologies. Their efficiency is approximately 17 percent higher than that of gigawatt coal-fired units. At the same time, carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour are reduced by 60 percent compared with coal-fired units of similar scale, while average nitrogen oxide emissions are more than 50 percent lower than national emission standards.

The plant is co-invested by CHN Energy and Sinopec, two of China’s top-notch energy enterprises, with the latter supplying stable gas resources. Upon full commissioning, the plant is expected to generate about 7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the yearly household electricity demand of approximately 6 million residents. It is also projected to save about 680,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 1.86 million tons each year, delivering significant environmental benefits.
